Everyone loves their pets. They are always there for us, make us laugh, and are members of the family! However, pets can be messy and smelly (and still adorable!). We all want what’s best for our pets, which is why you should pay attention to what you use to clean. Here are some green cleaning tips for cleaning with pets:
1. Smells
There is a great DIY for dealing with that “dog or cat smell” that can be difficult to get rid of. It’s super easy too! Add ½ cup of baking soda to a mason jar. Next, add 15 drops each of your favorite essential oils (we like lavender and lemongrass). Make sure to shake the jar between oils. Then add ½ cup of baking soda to the jar, give it another shake, and voila! You can also sprinkle it across your carpet before vacuuming to help rid your rugs of that pet smell. Baking soda is a great deodorizer and is definitely a tool in our cleaning kit!
2. Swap out your spray mop with a steam mop
When you spray cleaner on the floor, your pet will inevitably walk all over it. If they happen to lick their feet, it can cause some stomach issues. We love using a steam mop on our hard floors! And it’s totally safe for pets to walk across.
3. Use a squeegee
Now, hear me out! Have you ever finished vacuuming and looked down at your carpet and thought, “There’s no way I got all that pet hair out”? You’re probably right! Even vacuums with pet hair attachments can leave pet hair behind. This is where the squeegee comes in. Rub it over the carpet to loosen stuck pet hair. They even make them with long broom handles specifically for this purpose (your back will thank you). You can also dampen the squeegee and run it over your furniture to catch the hair there too. Just make sure the couch is able to get wet.
4. Lint roller
If you’re a pet owner, chances are you own about a zillion of these things. Did you realize you can also use them to get pet hair off of your furniture too? They work amazing and trap all that hair!
5. Natural pet toy cleaner
Most of the ones you can buy at the store are loaded with chemicals. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to make a safe cleaner for those beloved toys! Just combine 2 oz of liquid soap (make sure it’s a natural one!), 5 drops lavender essential oil, and warm distilled water (not tap as tap water can contain other contaminants) in a spray bottle and shake! Then, lay out your toys on a rack of some kind and spray until you see all the dirt, grime, and slobber come off! Clean toys for your best friends!
