Makeup sponges are amazing for getting your foundation to look perfect, but they hold on to what feels like EVERY DROP of foundation residue! It may look like stains, but it’s actually foundation that soaks into the sponge and sits there, which can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Gross! Makeup sponges also seem impossible to clean, so many people just toss out their sponges and buy new ones. Not only is this bad for the environment, but it’s also not great for your bank account. Luckily for you, we discovered a way to clean makeup sponges. The best part is it’s easy and you only need 1 thing! Here’s how to clean the makeup out of your beauty sponges:
1. Rinse, Rinse, Rinse
You’ll want to run your makeup sponge under the sink and get it wet like you should do when you’re about to use it. Give it a few good squeezes to get out the first few layers of makeup. You’ll want to do this until the water runs clear.
2. Deep Clean
Now that the initial layers of makeup are gone, it’s time to get deep! This step is so easy you’ll find yourself wondering “Why didn’t I think of that?” Pick up a bar soap of your choice and run it under the water to get it wet. Next, take your wet beauty sponge and rub it back and forth on the bar of soap. It shouldn’t matter if you rub the sponge a little hard – it is a sponge after all!
3. Why Does the Rubbing Work?
Cleaning magic! Ok, not really. But rubbing the sponge back and forth on the soap allows it to really get into the sponge and work. The makeup really gets in there! Keep rinsing and repeating as often as needed until the water runs clear. Then leave it overnight to dry.
4. Admire Your *New* Beauty Sponge!
We had to add this step in here because it’s really amazing how well this works. When we first heard about it, we thought “There’s no way this works AND is this easy.” Imagine our surprise when, just a few minutes later, we had virtually brand new makeup sponges!
Seriously, it’s that easy! Give it a try and let us know how it goes for you (and what your favorite bar soap to use for this is).
XOXO,
Squeaky Green House Clean
